What is iPoE Budget Control?
iPoE Budget Control is a patented technology to prevent damage to Antaira devices when a low voltage PoE switch is being used. This software technology prevents damage to an industrial switch by preventing devices from overrunning an already set PoE budget. iPoE Budget Control can be implemented on a unmanaged or managed Ethernet switch.
A low voltage PoE switch is capable of being powered by 12-36 VDC while still providing the needed 48-52VDC required by the PoE standard. It does this by using a power booster built into the circuitry. Because the power booster is more efficient at 36 VDC than at 12 VDC, the power budget for the PoE device changes when different voltages are being used.
There are various PoE power budgets at different voltages. Here are those specifications for reference - 90W@12VDC, 150W@24VDC, and 240W@48-55VDC.
Without Antaira's iPoE Budget Control, an industrial switch with the specifications outlined above, would allow for a PoE budget of 240 Watts and it would require an engineer to only use 90 Watts when running at 12VDC. If the engineer connects devices using more than 90 Watts while the industrial switch is being powered by 12VDC, damage to the device may occur.
When Antaira's iPoE Budget Control is present, the industrial switch can auto-sense the voltage input and limit the PoE power budget to 90 Watts when the switch is being powered by only 12VDC and increase the budget to 240 Watts, if the voltage should increase to 48VDC. This protects the industrial switch from damage.
When an industrial switch’s power budget crosses the overdrawn parameter, the industrial switch will begin to shut down power on the PoE ports. This will happen by starting with the highest port number, moving down to port 1 with the highest priority. In managed switches, it is possible to change the priority of the PoE port.
