Overcoming the Silent Killers of ITS

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) utilize a wide range of technologies and services in order to provide more efficient transportation networks. These transportation networks are systems of traffic controllers, radars, cameras, and various other sensors that provide data making real-time communications possible. Through the communication of these devices, we are now able to provide safer, more efficient intersections and roadways for our city streets and highways.
Along with these new technologies, however, come new challenges that must be overcome in order to create these intelligent transportation networks. One of the challenges is dealing with the shock and vibration that comes from pedestrians, vehicles, and natural elements in transportation environments. Known as “silent killers”, long-term shock and vibration will cause internal components to become loosened, damaged, or disconnected. The effects can be detrimental as failing equipment can cause unsafe conditions for pedestrians and can increase traffic congestion.
One of the ways engineers have been able to combat shock and vibration is through the implementation of industrialized network equipment. Designed specifically for communication systems, hardened networking switches and media converters provide the safety and protection needed for interconnection points that span between control units and monitoring stations.
