APPLICATION:
Ethernet Solutions for Access Control
|
|
Access control monitoring is a vital security concern for most buildings and secure sites. The primary way access control is regulated is by using a RFID card with a card reader. In the past, access control panels had serial devices utilizing a multidrop RS-485 network linking card readers back to the main controller. However, with the rise of Ethernet and the adoption of device servers that have the ability to translate serial information into Ethernet packets, computers have been replacing the old controllers and simplifying the wiring and installation process. A major benefit of converting to Ethernet is using media converters to transmit the access control data over fiber optics. Transmitting over fiber instead of a copper wire allows for better signal isolation and further distances. As technology grows, opportunities and challenges are formed.
With serial communication being a thing of the past, it is now possible to begin integrating other technology to improve security. Both voice over IP and video are common additions to access control cabinets. Both of these technologies utilize PoE to simplify connectivity requirements. With everything else in the panel taking advantage of Ethernet technology, serial card readers become a vulnerability. This concern has forced card readers to swap serial connections with improved IP based solutions.
All-in-one devices with a single Ethernet port are now a common solution since the majority of control cabinets are adopting Ethernet. To simplify connectivity even further, these devices utilize PoE. This means that for this application, a serial device server is no longer needed and installing the Antaira IMP-C1000-SFP can simplify the Ethernet connectivity. The IMP-C1000-SFP is a compact PoE media converter with a dual rate SFP slot. Using a single device to supply both the fiber connectivity and power for the card reader will limit the points of failure found in an access control cabinet. The dual rate SFP slot allows easy integration to an existing 100mb network by installing a 100mb SFP. As the system grows and a new Gigabit switch is installed in the main control cabinet, swapping out the 100mb SFP with a Gig version will quickly upgrade the network bandwidth. As security concerns change, Antaira’s industrial networking solution will continue offering innovative solutions to simplify and secure networks.
