Case Study:
When One Gig isn't Enough, 10G

Industrial automation is embracing the use of high-resolution cameras to assist with quality control applications and enhanced tool precision. Systems are implementing multiple cameras within a single tool to track the progress of a part or to enable several views of a part. The increase in camera deployment and the addition of other high bandwidth objects, such as the aggregation of multiple network switches, often cripple Gigabit Ethernet networks. One solution to this issue is utilizing Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) (802.3ad) to aggregate the bandwidth of several ports to communicate as one trunked port. However when utilizing LACP, valuable ports must be used for the port trunk instead of allowing other devices to join the network. Even with the deployment of LACP, limitations can be hit. The protocol has a limit of 8 aggregated ports per trunk; this means that on a Gigabit switch the largest backbone that can be exploited is 8 gigs. To simplify the design to a single connection and increase the bandwidth even further, 10G Ethernet networks are implemented.
Upgrading from common Gigabit Ethernet to an advanced 10G infrastructure is done with a simple hardware change. Deploying an Antaira LNP-1002G-10G-SFP-24 will solve the bandwidth issue, as well as other challenges confronting vision systems in industrial environments, by having two 10G SFP ports. This switch has 8 PoE+ Gigabit ports capable of supplying both power and connectivity to devices. In most cases, exploiting the PoE functionality of devices comes with the set back of needing an additional power supply. PoE operates on 48VDC which is uncommon in most industrial environments where 24VDC is a standard. To assist in integrating PoE technology with industrial equipment, Antaira equips several of its PoE switches with a voltage booster capable of taking a 12-36 volt input and providing the 48VDC needed to operate PoE devices. By choosing to deploy an Antaira LNP-1002G-10G-SFP-24 on a vision inspection project or any other application where high bandwidth is a concern, achieving a 10G network is simplified.
