Your PoE++ and IEEE 802.3BT Applications

The Challenge:

In the past, PoE worked nearly flawlessly. At the time, if your PoE or Powered Device (PD) said it was PoE+ compliant and your network switch (Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE)) providing the power, said it was PoE+ compliant, they were able to work together.  However, PoE++ is a different story.  

PoE++ can refer to the IEEE standard of 802.3bt but it may also refer to UPoE, HPoE or several other methods of supplying power and data over the network. This came about because it took a while to ratify the 802.3bt standard, so manufacturers took it upon themselves to create PoE/PD devices requiring more than 30 watts. Ultimately, this resulted in several interpretations which created an incompatibility issue in the market.  

The ultimate goal has been for PoE/PD manufacturers to eventually redesign to the IEEE standard, but until then, a substantial amount of products on the market currently do not follow the 802.3bt standard.  Engineers have been proprietarily stuck having to solely use PoE injectors and switches sold by the same PoE/PD manufacturer to be compatible. In almost all cases, these products are not created with extended temperature or ruggedized casings leaving the industrial networks exposed.
